SOUTH AFRICA

Greater Kruger

Six nights on safari in the Balule Private Nature Reserve.

DESTINATION OVERVIEW

Pondoro Game Lodge

This portion of the itinerary is centered around a six-night stay at Pondoro Game Lodge in the Balule Private Nature Reserve. Daily game drives, bush walks, and time spent with the same guide and tracker create a different safari experience from the earlier stops on the itinerary.

Balule shares an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park, allowing wildlife to move freely between the two areas. Together, the region is home to Africa’s Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros.

safari without fences

The Balule Private Nature Reserve

Balule Private Nature Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem and shares an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park. Wildlife moves freely between the two areas, allowing animals to follow natural movement patterns rather than remaining confined to a specific reserve.

One of the biggest differences between Balule and many public parks is the ability to drive off-road when appropriate. This creates opportunities to follow wildlife beyond established roads and often results in closer and more dynamic sightings.

Because Balule is a private reserve, only authorized safari vehicles are permitted. The result is a noticeably less crowded experience than public parks, with fewer vehicles at sightings and more opportunities to observe wildlife without large groups of visitors.

Combined with access to the larger Greater Kruger ecosystem, Balule provides a safari experience focused on tracking wildlife, observing animal behavior, and spending time in the reserve rather than simply driving between sightings.

daily life on safari

A Day in the Life at Pondoro Game Lodge

Most days begin before sunrise, with wake-up calls around 5:00 AM followed by coffee, tea, and a small snack before departing on the morning game drive. Wildlife activity is often highest during the cooler morning hours, making early departures a regular part of life on safari. Midway through the drive, guides stop for coffee, tea, and snacks before continuing the morning’s wildlife viewing.

After returning to the lodge, a full breakfast is served before the day slows down. Bush walks typically take place later in the morning and are led by the same tracker who accompanies guests on game drives. Time between activities is spent relaxing at the lodge, where private plunge pools overlook the Olifants River and wildlife is often visible directly from the rooms. During our stay, elephants spent an extended period of time just outside our room while we relaxed between game drives.

Afternoon game drives depart around 3:30 PM and continue into the evening, often returning after sunset. A traditional sundowner stop provides time to enjoy drinks and snacks in the bush before the drive continues. Dinner is served back at the lodge, where guests gather to share stories from the day before preparing for another early start the following morning.

Game Drives

Pondoro Game Drives

During our stay, sightings included Africa’s Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. Some of the most memorable encounters included following lions off-road as they moved through the reserve, observing two separate lion kills and watching hyenas steal a kill from a pride of lions.

Other sightings included a leopard feeding on its kill high in a tree and tracking lions on foot alongside our guide and tracker, only to discover one staring directly back at us from the surrounding vegetation.

These experiences provided a firsthand look at wildlife behavior and the constantly changing nature of life within the reserve.

bush walks

Pondoro Bush Walks

Bush walks provide a different way to experience the reserve than a traditional game drive. Led by the same tracker who accompanies guests throughout their stay, the walks focus on animal tracks, plants, insects, and the smaller details of the environment that are often missed from a vehicle.

Located along the Olifants River, Pondoro’s bush walks often follow both the bush and riverbanks. Hippos, crocodiles, and elephants are frequently visible along the river. The slower pace provides opportunities to learn more about the ecosystem and the skills used by trackers to locate wildlife. Part of the experience is never knowing what might appear around the next bend, creating a different feeling than observing wildlife from a vehicle.

anti-poaching tour

The Black Mambas

One bush walk during our stay was replaced with a visit to the Black Mambas, an all-female anti-poaching unit working within the Greater Kruger region. The program focuses on wildlife protection, environmental education, and reducing poaching through monitoring and community engagement.

The visit provided an opportunity to learn more about conservation efforts beyond the safari experience itself. Discussions focused on the challenges facing wildlife in the region, the role of the Black Mambas, and the work being done to help protect the Greater Kruger ecosystem.

Pondoro Game Lodge

Why We Returned to Pondoro

Pondoro Game Lodge is a family-owned safari lodge located within the Balule Private Nature Reserve. Owners Robbie and Lize Prehn have created a lodge experience that feels personal and welcoming, shaped by their passion for wildlife, conservation, and the surrounding reserve.

After visiting for the first time in 2014, we returned because of the people who make the lodge what it is. The same guide and tracker accompany guests throughout their stay, creating opportunities to build relationships and gain a deeper understanding of the reserve. Combined with attentive service, excellent meals, and Robbie and Lize’s hands-on involvement, these personal connections became one of the reasons we chose to return and continue to recommend Pondoro to others.
